It would take many lifetimes to explore everything there is to see in Rome. For most visitors a stay of a few days (or longer) is essential, but where are the best places to stay in Rome? I have rounded up a few recommendations, from my own experience and that of a selection of travel bloggers.

Where To Stay In Rome
The first decision will be where you want to be based. Rome is a large city, but has good transport links. For first time visitors the best area is probably the historic centre (centro storico) but for a return visit you might choose a more local district like the slightly bohemian Trastevere.
You will find a wide range of hotels everywhere, but note that they don’t always come cheap, especially in central Rome. So I have also included a choice of self catering accommodation.
Best Hotels In Rome
Gioberti Art Hotel
I loved the 4-star Gioberti Art Hotel, which has a great location very close to Roma Termini Station. The hotel is housed in a 19th century palace and the comfortable rooms have been refurbished in a contemporary style. A breakfast buffet is served in the 6th floor restaurant.
The Gioberti Art Hotel is a short walk from the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and Diocletian’s Baths.
NH Collection Fori Imperiali
My most recent stay in Rome was at the lovely NH Collection Fori Imperiali. It is located right next to Trajan’s Forum, making it the perfect location for anyone who wants to explore the sights of classical Rome (many of the rooms even have views overlooking the Roman remains). The hotel was comfortable and welcoming, and our room was well equipped with coffee machine, water, minibar and safe.
NH Collection Fori Imperiali has a rooftop bar with fabulous views, especially when the forum is lit up at night time. And the restaurant serves amazing gourmet meals – not casual dining but a place to be savoured.
Note that if you do stay here it is very much easier to walk to the hotel from Colosseo station than from Cavour (despite what Google Maps might tell you).
Campo De’ Fiori

Hotel Campo de’ Fiori ranks at the top of the list of best Rome hotels. It is perfectly located in the heart of Rome, at the corner of the popular piazza Campo de’ Fiori, and only a few minutes from the Piazza Navona. Housed in a charming baroque building, Hotel Campo de’ Fiori has recently undergone a meticulous renovation. The antique structure has been restored, with rooms that preserve their original coffered ceilings, offering a unique blend of history and luxury. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion in the superior deluxe rooms, with their poster canopy beds and antique paintings, or enjoying the cosy elegance of the classic rooms, every detail has been considered for your comfort. All rooms are soundproof and non-smoking and come with amenities like free wifi, AC, television, and minibar.
The staff will help you organise city tours, recommend good restaurants suitable for your tastes, and suggest hidden gems for shopping. If you are travelling with kids, babysitting services are also available. This luxury hotel is a perfect place to stay in Rome.
TripAdvisor Recommends…
The number one rated Rome hotel on TripAdvisor is the Singer Palace Hotel Roma. Everyone who has stayed at this centrally located, Art Deco style boutique hotel has raved about it – but the opulence comes with a very hefty price tag! Slightly less expensive, but also well rated is the Hotel Indigo Rome (although I haven’t stayed here, I have been in other Indigo hotels and can vouch for the fact that they are always very good, with quirky décor and stylish rooms).
Booking.com has some more reasonably priced but still well rated offerings, such as the very central Borghese Contemporary Hotel and the Albergo Delle Regioni, Barberini. A good budget option would be the Vatican Cozy Suites. And, if you are happy to stay a little way from the centre, then Relais Villa Coppedè in the quirky Quartiere Coppedè looks like an excellent choice.
Self Catering Options In Rome
There is lots of self catering in and around Rome. Book through booking.com, private operators or AirBNB (I particularly enjoyed AirBNB’s Gladiator’s House, close to the Colosseum).
CasaCau Apartments
Staying at CasaCau Apartments feels like having your own stylish Roman apartment, with all the comforts of home and the charm of a historic building. Located in a 17th century structure very close to the Trevi Fountain, and a short walk from the Spanish Steps, CasaCau offers six unique apartments that blend vintage furnishings, handcrafted décor, and curated art. The mix of old-world charm and modern amenities creates a perfect base for exploring Rome.
During my stay, I was struck by the thoughtful touches – like the fully equipped kitchenette stocked with Italian basics, and the daily delivery of fresh pastries that made breakfast feel special. The apartment was spacious yet cosy, with original wooden beams and terrazzo floors adding to the ambiance. The attention to detail was evident, from the luxurious bedding to the well-chosen books and magazines.
The location couldn’t be better for walking to Rome’s major attractions, yet the apartment provided a quiet retreat after a day of sightseeing. CasaCau offers a rare combination of privacy, comfort, and style, making it a memorable place to stay in the heart of Rome.

Be Mate Trastevere II
If you want to experience apartment living in Rome, then Be Mate Trastevere II is hard to pass up. The accommodation is located in the vibrant foodie haven of Trastevere, one of my favourite areas of Rome. It is a three bedroom and three bathroom apartment, perfect for a group of friends or a family to stay.
This is also a great option for those travelling with kids as it has a washing machine and a fully equipped kitchen, and it is well located in case you need to take the little one home for a nap during the day. There is a lift to access the apartment, so it is suitable for prams and for those requiring mobility assistance.
Trastevere is known for being one of Rome’s most beautiful and charming neighbourhoods and the Be Mate apartment is right in the heart of the area. Directly opposite the apartment is a supermarket and many fabulous restaurants and sights are within walking distance, including the Piazza di Santa Maria (7 mins), the Pantheon (25 mins) and the Victor Emmanuel II Monument (25 mins). There’s also a tram that stops just outside for those not wanting to walk. It was perfect accommodation and I will stay there again when I next visit Rome.

Hu Roma Camping And Self Catering
If you are after something slightly different away from the liveliness of the city centre, consider stopping at Hu Roma Camping in Town. Situated in Aurelia, about 30 minutes from Rome and the Vatican City, this is not just a campsite offering space for tents and motorhomes. It also offers luxury self catering accommodation that will allow you to relax and unwind after a heavy day of sightseeing.
This is the spot for those looking to stay in a green space, with their own cooking facilities, use of a pool and whirlpool baths, and an on site restaurant. Each accommodation option comes with a large open decking space where you can enjoy your morning cappuccino and brioche, or a glass of wine at the end of a hectic day. You can even travel with your pet should you wish, and there is plenty of parking available if you have decided to hire a car.
Getting into Rome is easy. The site provides a shuttle bus service directly from the front gate and runs frequently throughout the day. Alternatively, you have a metro stop (Cornelia on Metro Line A) 600 metres away. There is also a train station – Roma Aurelia – a 15 minute stroll from the site. This takes you straight into Termini station where you can head straight down Via Nazionale to all the main attractions.
